A temple for a tent
Castlerock Cubs hit another first this weekend by staying in Mussenden Temple on Friday 17th September 2010. 28 cubs both boys and girls slept in the Temple. They were accompanied by 1 Beaver and 1 Explorer Scout. 5 Cub leaders and 1 Beaver leader were lucky enough to sleep in the crypt.

Why the Temple? This year’s challenge for cub scouts was to camp in an unusual location. In order to meet that challenge 1st
Castlerock wrote to various locations and received many reply’s but
were really glad to get a response from one really close to home that
they use in their Group logo !! The national trust responded stating
that they would be happy for the cubs to stay in Mussenden Temple. The
cub camp consisted of a sausage sizzle, night walk, campfire, an
overnight stay in the Temple followed by breakfast. All that attended
agreed that it was a brilliant camp location with amazing views of
Donegal, County Londonderry, the Foyle and Bann Estuaries, and the
Causeway Coast. I am sure we will all in the future upon visiting the
Temple or being shown a photo of the Temple proudly say “I slept in
there!” to which we will probably receive the response, “of course you
did”. I am also sure that long explanations and smiles will follow.

After
breaking camp and clearing the site the cubs then headed for Portrush
where they participated in a morning of Rock climbing / abseiling and
body boarding with Xplore outdoors.
As
always on behalf of the kids I have to thanks the Scout Groups leaders /
Helpers / Administrators and parents for making sure everything came
together.
The
camp could not have happened without the help of the National Trust and
specifically Lynsey and Lisa who helped arrange and co-ordinate the
stay. I therefore want to take this chance to publically thank the
National Trust on behalf of 1st Castlerock Scout group
Children, Leaders and Parents. We look forward to working with the
National Trust again in the future. Thanks also to Steve, Gareth and the
guys from Xplore outdoors for and excellent day. More photos in the gallery.
Ballyhornan Leadership Camp
On Friday 22nd Ocyober 2010 14 Cubs, 2 YL's and the cub team headed to Ballyhornan Scout Centre for leadership camp. The camp was go,go,go from the start with twisted quizzes, leadership tasks, inspections, cooking and observation tests. The cubs all performed brilliantly and the camp treat was a visit to Exploris. The cubs have also adopted a rescued Seal.
